International Humic Substances Society
2024 Products

Humic substances (HS) are complex and heterogeneous mixtures of polydispersed materials formed in soils, sediments, and natural waters by biochemical and chemical reactions during the decay and transformation of plant and microbial remains (a process called humification).

Standard and Reference Samples

IHSS collects, distributes, and maintains freeze dried standard and reference samples that were isolated from a mineral Soil, Peat, Leonardite, and River Water. By definition, IHSS standard and reference samples must satisfy all four of the following criteria:

  1. A standard sample must have come from a site specifically designated by the IHSS for this purpose;
  2. A standard or reference sample must have been prepared according to a specific procedure designated by the IHSS;
  3. Standard sample preparations involved in (1) and (2) must have been conducted under the direct supervision of IHSS;
  4. The sample must be designated as a standard or reference by the IHSS.

Bulk Source Materials

IHSS distributes limited quantities of the source Soil, Peat and Leonardite used for extraction of standard samples.
